Here’s a very interesting article in The Guardian’s Comment is Free section. I’ve discussed this a little before, but I think it’s very interesting that this follows the dramatic drop of religious belief in the census. The pattern seems to be that religious conservatism hardens as overall numbers fall. The problem is that the fanatics tend to shout louder than the majority. Eventually you end up with something like present day America where Christianity has completely dominated the political system and an atheist doesn’t stand a chance in an election.
